It's October, and Brian and I are getting settled nicely into our new apartment. The free wireless internet is nice, but pretty inadequate for the kind of browsing that we like to do. It's a nice fail-safe, and it's also a nice way to quickly check our email and the web, from the living room. Preparations for Ireland are in full swing, between Carl, Alex, Brian, and me. It looks like the week in question will be the first full week of February, 2003. I'm thinking of putting up an Ireland page, for all the "boys" to update their part, as they will. More details, as I think of them, will reveal themselves.

New people just keep materializing at work. This was a very small operation when I started here in April, and now it's verging in scale to very big. They say that things we are doing in my group are very important to the company, and we need all the people we can get, but it makes me worry for the most recently hired people, when things "normalize," and the appropriate headcount is discerned. In the great reassembly of the lan at home, there are a few machines that are still not on the network yet. Vesuvius, my "fast linux box" has been having booting problems, so in lieu of trying to get the drive it will not boot to boot, I have moved it to Denali(the machine with this webserver on it), to be a really big samba share. I will purchase an 8 GB drive from someone in town, and see if I can get that one to work for Vesuvius. If not, then I fear I have yet another faulty part for that machine. Geoff had a terminal case of the hiccups yesterday. It actually pained me to witness him struggle in his bout with the hiccups. Everybody has their own remedy that always works for them, including me, but explaining it to someone else never works for them. What a shame. His hiccups eventually just went away, apparently, after about 36 hours. Blech.

CSS madness! I have given the whole site a little facelift. Put your mouse over a link, anywhere on the site, and you'll know what I mean. It actually was pretty easy, and I think I will put more CSS prettiness into the site, as I learn it and tame it.

This was my weekend to be sick. It came on last week, assuredly during my commutes with Geoff, who was painfully ill the week before. I experienced serious coughing, and took some serious Nyquil on Friday morning, after I got off work. I slept until 10 PM. I woke up refreshed and ready to go. Unfortunately, it was 10 PM. Brian got home at 1, and we went for a beer at the Newsroom. I remained awake for the rest of the night, and at 1 PM, attended a football-viewing/beer-drinking party way the hell down in Olathe, KS, about 25 miles out into the suburbs. Nonetheless, I enjoyed myself, and left after a whole four hours, when I was having trouble keeping my eyes open. I quickly bedded down when we got home(about 5:30 PM), and slept until about 11:30. I hung out with Brian for a while, and went back to sleep at about 1, and slept until 6 AM. Sunday was similar. I slept about four times, but inadvertently made myself wide awake for staying up all night, to get a good day's sleep before work tomorrow night. Hooray. Otherwise, I have decided for my trip to Dubuque this weekend, I will bring my laptop, and use it as a music device, in the car. With a 40 GB hard drive, it will easily hold my entire music collection, and my network is being choked at the moment, with the process of copying its entire contents over. Two-day workweek, this week, and then Homecoming will be fun. Expect pictures.

I had Business Billing at work tonight. Always a joy... All my thought is bent on my weekend, which begins in about 24 hours. I've been casually looking around on the internet for ways to power a laptop with an automotive cigarette lighter. The rough industry standard for the amount of time a laptop can stay powered, without being plugged in, is about 2 to 2 1/2 hours. However, I have been told that this is with things that use a lot of power drawing it, such as the speakers, the CD/DVD drive(s), and the screen. My plan will be to be running Winamp on the laptop, with a playlist of all of my songs on it, with a headphone jack-to-cassette adapter for the car. If the screen is runnning, lots of power will be used, but I have it set that my laptop, when closed, has no effect on any running programs. I will get a USB gamepad, and control the tunes with that, making for a safer drive. planning trips, for me, is almost as fun as actually taking them.

My new apartment's carpet, while very nice, seems to have odd regenerative properties. I will explain. We moved in a few weeks ago, and I have constantly picked up loose little lint-like pieces of carpeting, for disposal. Three or four days later, the little lint balls- dubbed "tumble-lint" by yours truly- return, often in greater numbers. Am I disrupting some kind of carpet ecosystem? Do I just need to vacuum? Is my carpet possessed by an ancient Hittite Warlord, in revenge for his defeat at the hands of the Chaldeans? Please help. Geoff has my number.

Homecoming was awesome, and possibly my favorite yet. Pictures are up, under the pics section. I have devoted today to sharpening the site up a little more, getting my finances in order, paying some bills, and maybe getting a new mobile phone. I just took a 45-minute shower, during which I almost fell asleep, and now I am exceedingly relaxed. Check out the photos, and I'll tell you more stuff, when I feel like typing more.

I have "upgraded" the look of the site. I think it looks nice, myself, though I'm still not quite sure about the colors. Also, for those of you using a fully CSS-compliant browser(like mozilla, Opera, or IE 5.5 for Mac), you can see some of the little enhancements that IE for Windows users cannot. Enjoy those. It looks like I have no major trips planned before Thanksgiving, though I might be headed up to Des Moines for to watch some friends run, and then drink with them later.

Color change complete! I even found a little hack for my CSS file that makes the link mouseovers work identically in IE. As for the menu staying with you as you scroll down the screen, you'll just have to get a fully CSS1-compliant browser, which, unfortunately, is not the one used by 95% of the internet viewing world. I still plan on adding other neat things, but for now, I'm going to let things settle down, and focus, once again, on putting substance on my webpage. Don't forget to vote.

Just finished updating another picture page into html. Still working on getting cgi-enabled stuff working. I have a lot of plans for the site, that'll need a lot of work done. When it's into fruition, though, it'll be at such a point that this site will be _useful_. I have another extended weekend. For next week, I'll be working second shift, commuting with my brother. They have some of their seniority out for the whole week, and they need some folks to help with all the new people. In exchange for this long weekend, I'll have a short weekend, next week. It's odd, but I actually have been finding it difficult to adjust to a day routine. Also, this page seems to work just fine with Opera, better than IE.

Getting ready for "the party" this weekend. A kcgeek personality will be throwing a Halloween party at their house, and costumes will be encouraged. I'm beginning to think about recanting my offer to my brother, to take my camera with him to Baltimore. He's heading there to see his girlfriend, for the first time since he's moved here. I hope he remembers that rent is due from the now freshly delivered and deposited check. You probably can't tell, but the pictures section is 100% cgi scripts now. I am also going to Lawrence this weekend, to see Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. The last time I went to Larrytown, I saw Galactic, and that was the best show I've seen since I moved to KC. So, as might be assumed, I am quite excited for this show, and for this whole short weekend.

The party was tons of fun, but I forgot my camera, and remembered it when I had driven 18 yards away from my place. The party reminded me that I'd like to get a winamp plugin for my system, but you needn't hear about that. Karl Denson played one of the best shows I've ever seen. I must say, the jazz shows that I see just make the rock shows I see look childish. It's just pure, raw music, coming at you. I might also add that the crowd at the venue was probably the most polite I have ever encountered. The place was visibly crowded, but people were always very considerate to anyone walking through the crowd. After Flogging Molly last week, it was a real breath of fresh air. If you are bored at work, give this a try. Here it is bigger. It is a much more modern version of a game that I wrote in BASIC, about 15 years ago, out of a 321 Contact magazine. After about 5 minutes of playing, I am hooked, and my best score is a paltry 610. I'll beat it!

It seems that a project that had appeared to many to be dead is anything but. K-Meleon is alive and kicking, with a release candidate available for public download. Oddly enough, it isn't available on the official website, but a full installer of the browser with the most customizable interface that I know, is linked in the developer threads on the Sourceforge project page. You, should you be so inclined, can download it straight from here(no longer works). It uses Gecko, which is the webpage renderer that mozilla uses, and this release is based on the version 1.2beta of mozilla. It supports Type Ahead Find, Tabbed Browsing, skinning, an excellent full-screen mode(much nicer than mozilla's, and most importantly, a fully customizable user interface. On top of all this, it's very stable, fast, and makes my page come up just fine. Help yourself.

Everyone needs to read this site. It makes startling sense, and is very exciting at the same time. This page puts things delightfully into perspective.
