Super Bowl
It hadn't occured to me that the Super Bowl happens today, until I went to the store with Brian, and saw throngs of shoppers, looking for chips, beer, soda, barbecue paraphernalia, and assorted weekend-type food items. It looked like the grocery store where I worked in high school(which has now become a Walgreen's), on the day before a holiday, or when a slight deviation in weather was forecast. Empty, crumb-strewn shelves greeted us throughout the store, and all the commerce around us made us decide to purchase food for a "real" dinner, on Monday night.

I got my W2 back this week. Looks like I'm pretty seriously in the hole, this tax season. Guess I know where my bonus check goes, this year. Anyway, I'm just checking back in. I might have some news I can make public soon. Stay tuned.

Wintry KC
Wow! Surprise snow. I walked outside this morning, and the only direction I could look was straight down, as a torrent of flakes seemed to swarm directly at my eyes when I looked up. Traffic, as I crossed Broadway, was crawling along at 2-5 mph, with wheels spinning as if they were going 100 mph. I slowly made my way over to the 10th & Main Transit Plaza, and waited for about half an hour for a bus that never came. So, when I was starting to shiver, I called my boss, and asked him if it'd be okay if I stayed home today, and he consented. So here I am.

Bigger is Better
I made a couple of improvements to the site today, including increasing the standard size of all the pictures that my current camera has taken, to 800 by 600 pixels, from 640 by 480 pixels. if you don't know what I'm talking about, just look at the pictures from 2003 and on, and you'll see that they are bigger than they used to be. Enjoy, should you be one to notice that kind of thing.

Email Form
And, surprise, surprise. I have now created an email form, so you can send me an email without the luxury of seeing what my email address is. You can reach it at any time, at the bottom of the front page, by the way. Enjoy, until I get sick of all the spam, and shut it off, or wrack my brain trying to make it smart.

RIP Denali
Denali: July 1999:February 2004

RIP

The original machine that went from being my own PC, to an experimental linux machine, to a sturdy linux server(and the host of this website), has finally hit its limit. Please report any problems you see with this website, because it's now running on bigger, faster Vesuvius. Denali has had all the vital functions removed from it, and it now running on life support. I will pull the plug at 8AM on Monday, for all who would like to be there for it.

Irish Ale is Good
Man, Boulevard has really produced a winner in this year's batch of Irish Ale. It is really just amazing. Also, if you can get your hands on some Bell's Two-Hearted Ale, I'd very highly recommend that too.

No Sleep for You!
That was certainly an unpleasant night. I worked an enterprise release from midnight until six, and came home to be oncall. I was then almost immediately paged(at least, with enough delay for me to get comfortably asleep) to join a call, regarding moving two simple text files that the AppAdmins forgot to tell us to move in an earlier implementation, that wound up taking all of the remainder of the morning, as everyone on the call argued about what the proper procedure was to order a production move outside their official maintenance window. It was a little slice of hell, I assure you, and because of it, I had to cancel going to the Galactic show tonight.

New Schedule
So yeah, I have been a little sluggish with the site updating lately. We switched to our new schedule this week, which should mean a lot less work for us in the future, but for now, it means lots of hours and after hours work from home. However, I had both Monday and Friday off this week, and as I am the primary oncall every Thursday from now on, that basically means that since I am obliged to be awake well into the wee hours of Friday morning, then there is now need for me to go into the office on Fridays, and that's A-OK with me.

There are certainly some drawbacks, though. For one, I seem to be working every release that comes along, for which Alex isn't the preassigned oncall. This is all in the name of getting everyone trained while maintaining some order in our production environments. So, I'll take the good with the bad, espeically since the bad seems to be fleeting. I'm going to go and get some pictures of the West Bottoms today.

Yet Again
Sigh. I'm sorry about all this instability. Denali officially died this week, and the big 250 GB drive that I had in it had to be moved to vesuvius, which then had to have its kernel recompiled to support the newer filesystem on the drive, and then I had to correct corruptions in the filesystem, inflicted by the dying denali. Anyway, whether you know what I'm talking about or not, that all translates to about two days downtime for the site. I know I'm sounding like a broken record here, but it should work fine now. Sigh.
