From Paso Robles, the train entered the only segment of the route in which it could exceed forty miles per hour. California's most boring stretch, the 200 miles between Paso Robles and Salinas, was covered in about three hours, in the fastest we ever saw the train go, which was probably about eighty miles per hour.
