So is there not going to be a skywalk from the parking garage to the terminal entrance? That seems like a cluster fvck of people trying to get across. I hope I am wrong.
Why would one be needed? People walk across the street without one today just fine.
Well I was just thinking pedestrian safety, plus now, there are two separate terminals and garages, not just one big one that will have one entry point versus multiple. I believe in the original plans there was a skywalk.
There will be multiple places to walk across to the garage at. The departures level will be covered the entire way. It would be out of the way for most people parking to take a below ground tube. Arriving passengers will only have to cross private vehicle lanes before reaching the elevators/stairs in the new garage. They won’t have to dodge buses, etc like they do today

They've done a huge pr push on the disability access for the new terminal. It's all really cool stuff and I've read the exact article in like four different places now. 😂

I hope we start seeing more reveals like this as it gets closer to opening.

The underground tunnels are a nice feature for staying out of the weather, I suppose, but people in wheelchairs or pushing strollers still have to use elevators to get up to the terminal level, whereas what is being built will not.

Many terminals have a similar configuration for the terminal building, arrivals and departures roadway, and parking garage. As an example, here is the arrivals roadway at RSW Southwest Florida International Airport, built in 2006. There are several crosswalks, and during high traffic periods, police will act as crossing guards to stop traffic and get pedestrians across to the garage as needed. https://goo.gl/maps/Jwe27MfYUhFsEZCo7
I am also surprised that there is not an "improved" connection between the garage and the terminals. Sea-Tac for example has two tubes (grade separated between the arrivals and departure roadways) with moving walkways and check-in kiosks. They connect with one of the middle floors in the garage.

Same with Miami from the people mover to D and E. It seems like a design miss not to have a wheels-friendly option for the 500 feet from, say, the middle of the parking structure to the ticket counters. Airports are one place where many people often juggle a lot of stuff (baby seats, wheelchairs, heavy luggage).

Moving walkways also can be ramped to the ticketing grade (only about 8 feet vertically) once inside the terminal (see Providence airport for an example).

I felt like this was a miss too but I'm kind of over it. If it's bad weather go down to arrivals level and walk over. I usually get dropped by Uber anyways but it does seem like it would make garage parking more attractive. Maybe something thst could be added in a future improvement.

I had a weekend flight a couple weekends ago at MCI during that massive storm that rained for all night. The *roof was leaking water* inside the airport terminal where we were sitting.

It's not just the food- the roofing is literally giving in now apparently- that airport needed to go so badly.
This is what happens when you abandon the continuous maintenance that buildings require. Why are you surprised?
I mean, didn’t Ole aviation director Mark van loh kind of intentionally let maintenance slip to help sell the new terminal vote?
Yes, he certainly did. He was also the one responsible for throwing out all the various red herrings as "reasons" for needing a new terminal. IE: The de-icing non-issue, facility maintenance not being done, etc.

Almost assuredly especially if they want public money

Building out that southern wing may only be $150-250 million based off of similar sized expansions ongoing in the US

The press release specifically mentions Stockyards, Urban Cafe, and Charlie Hustle in the initial list of vendors in the airport, so it's reasonably safe to assume that the other places depicted weren't chosen on a whim by the renderers.

I'll be very happy if the new terminal does wind up with a POI-O; while Stockyards is...OK, having Brookside as a "zone" makes me hope that another brewery will join them when they open.

BuildKCI tweets there will be BBQ but discussions still ongoing. IIRC JoesKC was part of the existing vendor's bid that lost and threw a fit in the KC Star.

Also love the renders.

These renderings are great. Can't believe nearly nixed all this because of "muh convenient security lines". Glad we're slowly bit by bit taking our city back from the suburbanites.

There’s a Bo Lings hiding on the far left of the City Market rendering too.
