Re: Future Stadium Plans: Chiefs and Royals

Well by that standard, the airport doesn't work well for JoCo either. But over 50% of the O&D traffic at the airport is from JoCo. LOL The existing sports complex is adjacent to a major highway interchange -- it really doesn't get much better than that for access. Same with the airport. The airport ...

Re: Postcards From the Edge of Time

Note the VFW building in the background before its 1976 exterior "modernization." Are you certain about that date? My father had his office in the VFW building until sometime in the late 1970s when he moved to the Congress building. He definitely was at VFW in the late 1960s, and my recollection wa...

Re: Phase Three Streetcar Expansion

^ That is the short answer, and while correct, the machinations of the KCMSD go back decades. Westport High has been one of the district's punching bags since the 1980s. After they demolished Paseo HS, it became their primary gameplaying toy along with Southwest High. See the school district thread ...

Re: Phase Three Streetcar Expansion

Having a streetcar system that connects several area hospitals and universities will likely provide a certain level of constant ridership, and well as attracting residents in health care fields to live in the city. KU, UMKC, and KCUMB all send residents to work in local hospitals and clinics. Some ...

Re: We are getting a new airport!!!

The underground tunnels are a nice feature for staying out of the weather, I suppose, but people in wheelchairs or pushing strollers still have to use elevators to get up to the terminal level, whereas what is being built will not. Many terminals have a similar configuration for the terminal buildi...

Re: Broadway

^I wrote a letter to Mayor Cleaver asking the same thing circa 1990 -- of course they had just done much larger demolitions over on Main (including Milton's Tap Room along with block after block of apartment buildings, Warner Plaza).

The city back then basically did whatever developers wanted.

Re: Broadway

Would love to see the next generation of these pharmacies be less suburban in land use. That parking lot at 39th and Broadway is atrocious. That whole site was full of dense, small buildings (Tobler flowers, featured in a scene in Mr. & Mrs. Bridge, for example) as recently as 1990 -- same for seve...

So can a "tube" pedestrian cross from the Commerce Bank Arcade building connection directly to the Jones Store building connection without having to go down to the first floor? That is the improvement I most wanted from this remodel.

Re: COVID19

This pandemic is shifting socially. It’s no longer an over 65 disease. Over 65 92% have at least one vaccination shot. It’s turning into a family disease. There’s comments like this becoming more and more common. My cousin who is a doctor had been slogging in the covid ward since last year said ent...

Re: Future Stadium Plans: Chiefs and Royals

The K was gut renovated a few years ago. My understanding was that included an overhaul of the players facilities. It certainly made the VIP areas more modern for the "guest experience." The brutalist architecture of the era is actually coming back into fashion (just as we demolish a prime example, ...

Re: We are getting a new airport!!!

^Mayor Wheeler fully admits this (he is still around as is every KC mayor since the 1970s lolololol. I saw Wheeler in Westport in 2020). The problem is that the southwestern direction of growth was already well underway by the 1960s. Lenexa and southern OP were basically finalized for growth in the ...

Anyone have a picture of
Paul’s Bar

224 West 12th St
Kcmo
This would have been among the buildings demolished around 1984 for the current Marriott DT (not the newer Muehlebach addition, but the old Vista hotel). This was a big early 1980s redevelopment scheme, Mayor Berkeley era.

Re: We are getting a new airport!!!

KC has long been mentioned on the OneWorld blogs as "high on the list" for a BA LHR flight. BA always wants a lounge -- they are sticklers about this, whether 3-class or 4-class service (Tourist, Premium Economy, ClubWorld, First). In this case (the new MCI), this would almost certainly be an Admira...

Re: COVID19

Bottom line, this doesn't stop until people who can get vaccinated. ^If the case that vax's lose significant efficacy after 5-6 months will be a bit difficult to keep the planet on top of it. Under 15% of planet is fully vaccinated, about half using Sinovac that isn't very effective against Delta. ...

Re: COVID19

COVID is an airborne virus hosted in the human pulmonary system -- it is still spreading in indoor spaces in great quantity in KC and most everywhere in the world. So unless you are avoiding people like 2020, you are getting "exposed" if not infected. The word infected simply implies sero-conversion...

Re: We are getting a new airport!!!

I'll recount here for posterity an amusing incident that happened at Dallas DFW 10 years ago. I had wandered over at T-45 from the Admirals Club to the high "C" gates, which are down a ramp, 3 or 4 gates clustered together. I was flying on the 6pm dinner flight to BDL (Hartford CT) from KC or Denver...

The music school was the Horner School of Music, which as mentioned, merged into UMKC after the war. The Horner family is still prominent in KC -- members of the KCCC IIRC.

Re: Postcards From the Edge of Time

I've got several neckties and a couple of suits from Palace (borrowed from my Dad). It used to dominate the men's clothing retail space in KC, but it did not make (attempt to make) the transition to the suburbs. The company, and that building, closed in 1964.

Re: KCI Flight Schedule Adjustments

Does the JetBlue announcement mean that AA will drop the MCI-BOS service and/ or MCI-LGA service on the schedule this autumn? MCI-BOS is really the hole in the map, as UA will always offer nonstop service to Newark which is a $70 Uber ride into Manhattan and usually takes less than 45 minutes.
