Re: Three Light

What was on the NW corner of 14th and Main. It appears between 1923 and 1941, there was a demolition and rebuild of the structure since it appears physically different even though it's also 2-stories. In 1923. The President Hotel hasn't been built yet. https://i.imgur.com/7sTTO5U.png In 1941. https:...

Re: St Louis - Clean Sweep effort

It isn't that simple. California is a much more populous state with more complicated infrastructure to build and maintain. It is in an earthquake zone, so there is need for more building, construction, and insurance regulations; inspections/code enforcement. Because of the topography, pollution accu...

The East Village has been nothing for over 20 years.
The area where the P&L District is now was nothing for 40 + years.

Re: Katz on Main

During the Depression and war, in rural NW Missouri, my grandmother, mother, and two aunts (who were small children) walked into town to buy groceries every Saturday. They lived just under two miles from the edge of town, and then it was about six addition blocks to the store. The children were nece...

Yes, those displays would have been better had they had hoards of marauding apes coming at you, an occasional rhino, and perhaps an angry elephant.

Re: Unbuilt KC

Unbuilt Baltimore Hotel. No dates given. I makes me wonder if this was a proposed design for a replacement Baltimore Hotel on the NE corner of Baltimore and 12th Street after it was demolished. It's too art deco and stepped to be a design for the original Baltimore Hotel. https://jchs.odyssey.histor...

Re: Hotel Phillips to get multimillion dollar freshing up

I didn't see the point of the beds being up against the windows either. Since this is nearly unheard of in hotels, I suspect they didn't have a choice? This historical photo of one of the rooms in the Phillips Hotel doesn't show the bed against the window. Click on View All Items and scroll right t...

Re: Four Light

A tower can house apartments on a small footprint. One only needs to look at the Chambers Building (now Chambers Lofts) on the SW corner of 12th and Walnut. It's a 12-story building (11 over retail). There's not any reason a building on that footprint couldn't be even taller -- say 20-stories. Just ...

Fang, thanks for the research. Luckily appears no significant architecture loss. So many mom and pop small business on just this one block. Even in 1940, many people still wouldn't have had cars --especially during WWII because automakers stopped making cars entirely, and gas and tire rationing dur...

In 1935, the shorter building used to be called The Store Without a Name. There was also one downtown.
