We began the weekend to see the terrible, terrible Royals almost catch up with the Cleveland Indians. We grabbed a quick drink afterwards, got some Town Topic, and went home. Here, Renae brushes her teeth merrily.
Curtis prepares for bed with a glass of cold water.
I settle down for the evening by mooning my street.
I tried on Renae's sunglasses, which were apparently broken. I guess I thought I was being, "funny."
Steve and Renae happily bed down for the night on my luxurious futon.
I woke Renae up for another picture.
Our first stop was Waldo Pizza. Here's my pizza, and my beer.
Kristin and Curtis discussed hand gestures.
The next bar we visited was 75th Street Brewery. Kristin paid attention to her right, while Matt filled out his entry for said bar.
For everyone but me, there were some strangers in the group. To better acquaint everyone, we went around the table in a twelve-step program manner, introducing ourselves. It was revealed that I once soiled myself in first grade.
Kristin and Matt hog some more camera.
Matt and Ryan worked on their answers.
This is a "Good Hope IPA," produced at 75th Street Brewery.
Matt gave himself a good rubbin'.
Curtis and Steve were getting into the swing of things. It was after noon, after all.
Jeff brought his camera too, and took lots of pictures. I look forward to seeing them.
The time came to leave the bar, and Jeff left a couple of swallows of beer, and his camera. I grabbed the camera.
We scurried over to the bus stop at 74th and Broadway in time to cause a late departure, what with twelve of us boarding at once.
Our next stop was Charlie Hooper's, in Brookside. Renae kept asking me how many beers I had consumed, because of a wager she had with Steve and Curtis about how many I would have consumed before executing a "drunken cartwheel." She later won the bet, after I'd had five beers.
The kids played some foos.
The other kids played some pool. Here, Ryan terrorizes Andi.
Kristin awaits her turn, while Josh looks on.
There's probably a story behind this severed car door being left beside 63rd street. Matt suggested it involved someone shouting, "just leave it, man! Let's go!"
Our next stop was the Peanut at 50th and Main. The 12 of us split four pitchers.
We also blocked the door, in our mass.
The street corner, as taken from my seat in the bar.
Some fratties from Rockhurst came by, and solicited donations for some AIDS-related concern.
Cole made a rule that at the next bar, which we determined would be O'Dowd's, we would all be required to get distinct beers, in order of who arrived first. Josh, upon hearing of this rule, bolted out the door, pelting off toward the next bar. All but three of the assembled party followed him with haste. Jeff, Cole, and I stayed behind and finished the beer.
The remaining three of us set off at our leisure, after the beer was gone. This sign was posted near the Plaza Library.
The Country Club Plaza in April.
Matt and Kristin were sitting merrily at O'Dowd's when we arrived.
Josh, who had hurried over, got a Smithwick's. It makes me wonder why he hurried.
Merriment at O'Dowd's.
Matt, Kristin, and I cool our heels.
Darker, more poetic version.
The sun was *right* outside the windows.
Matt and Kristin rendered up inquisitive glances at Cole's 25th picture of them. I had to delete a lot of pictures.
Here we are in the dark again.
Curtis waits for the bus.
Our next stop was Harling's Upstairs, which apparently, every Saturday afternoon has live blues music and a packed house. On this particularly grand Saturday, with a high in the low eighties, the crowd was very receptive and friendly. Steve awaited his chance to play some pinball.
Steve, Curtis, and Renae enjoying the blues music.
We went out back, to the rooftop deck, and the locals began chatting with us.
Jeff and Renae enjoy the sun.
Kristin and Josh had a nice time too.
Ryan and Matt unveiled plans to open a bar in KC. I'm very excited.
Jeff disavows the graffiti.
Matt and Kristin soak up the rays.
Jeff greeted me from his perch.
An urban, hip Renae and Steve.
Cole, up close.
We left Harling's, and walked over to Josh and Callie's place, nearby. They distributed beers, which we drank as we walked to the next bar.
Steve, Renae, and Ryan signal to the other group to hurry up, as we pass Costco.
The next bar was the Velvet Dog, and quite possibly Kansas City's best patio, complete with tables, pool tables, and a bocce ball court, charmingly misspelled on the wall.
Kristin digs the "Boccie."
Cole drinks in the surroundings.
Jeff drinks a drink.
Matt disputes an offical bocce ruling.
Curtis awaits his turn.
Callie enjoys being done with her MCAT, which she had just taken.
The boys play bocce with tenacity.
Curtis takes a break from the game to compare throats with Renae.
Renae was wise to me.
Jeff, as is his wont, took over the administrative side of the bocce game.
Steve and Josh played some outdoor pool.
Posed photos rock!
Renae and I walked over to Sol Cantina, a new bar in the same area as the Velvet Dog, and met up with Mary, a recent KC transplant with whom we went to college. She is also a recent dog owner. Here's Renae with Baxter.
Mary was at Sol with a friend whose name I regret I've forgotten, but who had the sister of her dog. This one's name is Chloe.
Mary smiles with her dog.
Chloe and Baxter get rowdy.
Callie and Josh joined us at Sol, unable to keep from eating something.
Mary ate some sort of delicious chip concoction.
Mary and the waitress that people in our group said looked like Lindsay Lohan. I didn't see it.
Renae and Cole waited for some food.
Mary and I smiled.
Curtis, Steve, and Jeff soon joined us.
Curtis and Steve enjoy some XX, while Mary tries to control her restless dog.
Then, the dogs both fell heavily asleep on Mary's lap.
The next, and final bar, was Grinders. We would have gone farther, but our energy was just sapped. Renae and Ryan awaited teh arrival of food.
Steve and Cole were not happy with my flash.
Bimal joined us for Grinders.
Cole crosses his arms defiantly.
Renae and Ryan get jittery.
Steve and Cole enjoy the last drink of the crawl.
We wandered afield, waiting for a cab. We finally just walked home.
We just voted to pay a billion dollars to keep the Royals. Meanwhile, the EPA is threatening to fine the city millions of dollars for its almost derelict sewer system. Here it is, backing up.
It was raining really hard, but we made it home.
