With almost nothing planned, I had a great Cinco de Mayo in 2007. I had just come off of being on call, and was ready to hit the town.
Jeff and I started the morning with a free ride down to the Crossroads on a bus for the KC Urban Tour. We caught the bus in probably the most congested corner of downtown: 13th and Main.
Not wanted to entirely use the ride for our own gain, we paid lip service to the tour, and went into the Piper Lofts building, and spotted this sign on the toilet in the model unit.
We took the freight elevator up to the top floor, on the way to the roof. One day, this will all be condominiums.
The roof commanded excellent spotting for calling in artillery in all directions. This is KC's strangest-looking house, in my opinion.
Southwest Boulevard certainly is coming along.
Stuart Hall lofts with the BMA building on the hill.
The West Crossroads.
Jeff likes the skyline view.
So do I.
Jeff snapped a shot while I was singing or something.
The corner of Southwest Boulevard, 19th, and Baltimore.
A vacant lot that only ever gets used as parking on First Fridays.
19th and Baltimore, with the TWA Building and the new Arena in the background.
Main street and on into the East side.
The brown brick building in this picture is Jeff's favorite in town.
The Abdiana building, the Tension Envelopes building, and more of the East side.
The 1900 block of Main.
Then, a lot of time passed with no photographs. I went to The Coffee Girls for lunch with Jeff, Taqueria Mexico for drinks, were joined by Erp there, said goodbye to Jeff, went to Jesse's for drinks, and then on to Erp's place so he could shave. Here he is, in front of his gigantic wall.
Tons of surface lots, in the middle of downtown.
MODOT apparently uses slaps of plywood to cover closed routes on signs.
We went to KCK and wandered around looking for St. Joseph and St. Benedict Church, where the Polski Festival was being held. We found it after a brief unintended detour into Armourdale.
This guy led the polka band at the festival.
Several people of the Cloth were in attendance.
A spirited group of the Sisters of Charity, out of Leavenworth came down to do some singing and dancing.
Even though it was a Polish festival, this sister came up and sang Danny Boy.
It was lovely.
The sisters really seemed to enjoy singing and dancing for us all.
The festival was moderately, but enthusiastically attended by a group of devoted parishioners. I really liked that neighborhood, whatever it was called. It seemed very closely-knit.
More festival-goers.
The sisters called up any takers to join them in the Hokey Pokey. Here, the left elbow is put in.
The watching crowd seemed very entertained.
This boy would just not look straight at the camera.
After the Polski Festival, Erp and I went down to Biz's "Cinco de Mustache" party in Overland Park. Biz hired a DJ, and hammed up the patio.
He was not plussed by criticisms and incessant photographs.
The contestants for the mustache competition lined up to be judged. I did not take part.
Erp is appraised in a duck-duck-goose manner.
Another contestant.
Another contestant.
The DJ serenaded Amy with a song I didn't know.
Amy sang some Britney Spears song I didn't know.
Biz and his boys, just before the rain started.
After the rain and police chased us inside, the singing continued.
Erp and I headed back downtown, and of course closed Harry's Country Club.
Rose took a load off and had a nice conversation with us.
As we were shooed out by the impatient staff, I snapped a picture with Sarah.
We walked over to the Caddyshack for until-3am beers. Andrea was happy to say hello.
